What is vegan leather?

The definition

Many people ask us.

What is the definition of Vegan Leather?

Simply put, there are two ways to look at it - “Vegan“ and “Leather”.

"Vegan” means 100% free of animal ingredients and animal footprints (e.g. animal testing).

The term “leather” initially refers to animal fur.

When we say vegan leather, we mean leather in any form that is made in an animal-like morph.

How to recognize vegan leather

In summary, therefore all synthetic leather (artificial leather) as well as vegetable and fruit leather can be included in this category.

Nowadays, recycled genuine leather has been created in response to environmental concerns.

This kind of leather is made by discarded genuine leather which are broken into tiny genuine leather fibers first, and then mixed with other artificial fibers and compressed. We won’t call them “vegan leather”.

The difference between “Vegan leather” and traditional synthetic leather?

When it comes to synthetic and artificial leather, people think of toxic substances, harmful to the environment, cheap, poor quality, bad odor and short life span.

It is true that traditional synthetic leather, such as PU (polyurethane) leather and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) leather, were created to replace animal leather, which have been on the market for many years, have a negative image.

In the manufacturing process, a large number of chemical agents and organic solvents are used, in order to simulate the shape of leather and to give it its special functions. This irreversible pollution and energy consumption is an accomplice to the killing of the environment.

The concept of Vegan is based on the idea of "goodness" and "non-killing".

We can also interpret it as kindness to the world and to animals.

Thus, to go deeper into the definition of Vegan Leather, the following are some of the indicators that we think we can follow:

"Non-toxic, low-pollution, recycled, long-lasting, and raw materials sourced as far as possible from nature but with a reduced carbon footprint".
